Couple of new MySQL articles
Just wanted to call everyone’s attention to a couple of new articles I’ve recently written that you may be interested in. The “A Quick Look at MySQL 5.4” article has seen a lot of hits as has the download link for MySQL 5.4. If you haven’t tried MySQL 5.4 yet, please do and let us know what you think. One question I’ve gotten quite frequently is “Besides the InnoDB scalability fixes, where are the other enhancements in 5.4 you talk about?” The answer is they aren’t included right now, and are expected later. I mention that fact at the bottom of the article, but I apologize that I didn’t make that fact prominent enough.
Another article you might find interesting is “Why Move to MySQL from Microsoft SQL Server?” I get a lot of questions about SQL Server vs. MySQL (especially at the recent User Conference…), which isn’t surprising considering our most recent global community and enterprise surveys show Microsoft is the #1 platform that people indicate they’ll move from to MySQL. I thoroughly enjoyed my 10-year stint as a SQL Server DBA and think it’s a very good DB platform, but I also think MySQL makes an attractive alternative in a number of ways. In such a short article, I couldn’t cover everything in great detail, but hopefully the high points I do go over will help you get a feel for why moving to MySQL from SQL Server can make sense in a number of cases.

Hi Robin!
I hope you’re doing well
Incidentally, I have a request that ties in to both of your articles. I was wondering where I can get MySQL 5.4 binaries for Windows.
I don’t see them on the website, and so far I’ve seen noone mentioning anything about 5.4 for windows.
kind regards, and thanks in advance,

Hey Roland!
Good to hear from you. Yep, the WIN 5.4 binaries aren’t out primarily because they haven’t gone through our internal testing processes yet. Mikael’s got the work done now for WIN, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer. Thanks for the patience…
