Part three of Falcon article series available

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

I just posted part three of the Falcon article series that’s currently running on the MySQL Dev/Community zone. If you wondered about table support in Falcon, or how the new engine’s indexes differ from traditional B-Tree and Clustered indexes, or how to backup and migrate to Falcon, check out the article as it should have the answers you need. Part one and two of the articles are also available if you haven’t read them yet.

Regarding Falcon releases, we’ll be putting out a new Alpha releases each month on the march to the first Beta, which we’re targeting for late Q2 this year. Quite a number of new engine features are planned for the first Beta, so we’re pretty excited about what’s coming. Stay tuned…

New Falcon Alpha Available

All -

The Falcon team has just posted a new Alpha release of the new Falcon transaction storage engine. The 5.2.3 release contains a number of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and can be downloaded on the 5.2 download page.

In addition, part two of my article series on Falcon has just been posted to the Community Articles page on the MySQL web site. I cover how Falcon performs transaction management, how concurrency is handled, and finish with an interesting example of how fast Falcon can accomplish rollbacks when they’re needed. Be sure to check it out and be looking for part three, which will be coming soon.

Thanks for your continued support and be sure to drop me a line and let me know what you think of Falcon.

New 5.1 Beta available

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Just wanted to let you know that we’ve got a new 5.1 beta release ready for download (5.1.15). Lots of fixes and minor changes went into 5.1.15 so be sure to check the release notes.

To date, the most popular new features in 5.1 continue to be partitioning, row-based replication, events (internal scheduler), and disk-based cluster. If you haven’t done so already, check out the tech white paper I wrote on 5.1 that has lots of examples showing the new 5.1 features in action.

One other interesting fact: according to our latest survey results, 22% of community users and 12% of enterprise customers are already using 5.1 in production. Of course, we don’t recommend you use beta software for production use, but it’s nice to see folks finding that the 5.1 beta can hold up under that kind of pressure.

Be sure to drop me a line and let me know what you think of 5.1 and what more we can be doing.

Thanks for helping with Falcon!

Hey all -

Just wanted to thank everyone who has been using and testing the new Falcon transaction storage engine. Our first alpha release was downloaded over 52,000 times in January alone. Be looking for a new alpha release soon that has some performance improvements and other changes.

Also, I just started a new 3-part article series on Falcon that goes through the engine in detail, so be sure to check out part 1 on our articles page when you get a chance.

Thanks again - and be sure to shoot me your feedback (both good and bad) on Falcon.
